As you can see from the synopsis, the concept of this story is fabulous. I loved the idea of a grieving woman working through that grief to find justice for her murdered fiancé as well as the new crimes that seem to be putting her in danger.

Unfortunately, the book didn’t live up to my hopes.

The Tempering Agent opened with a choice of words that made dating the book confusing, but I figured out it was contemporary soon enough. Little things bothered me—things like how Priscilla is a Brit, but she speaks with American syntax and diction. Inconsistencies in behavior and descriptions made things a bit difficult to swallow at times.

However, I have to give her props for usually keeping descriptions interesting, not overloaded, and without info-dumps. Unfortunately, she does have her characters tell stories as if she’s writing them. At those times, there are unusual sentence structures and diction.

I wish that was all.
There is also a bit of repetitive telling, run-on sentences, and a few other editing issues. For those bothered by those things, you won’t be able to miss them. I purchased this book last night, so I’d suggest to the publisher to take another look at it.

The worst part of the book for me, however, was the romance. Now, I don’t usually read books for the romance, but the “Hi, I’m Donnie, and I’m going to flirt with you because I already decided that I like you.” Followed by the, “I’m in love after two meetings” from her… Ugh. It can work. It can. Sometimes “insta-love” is the point of a novel, but if you’re going to do it, just be upfront about it. And she didn’t. She wrote it as if it was normal to do that. And well, it’s not.

I really wanted to love The Tempering Agent, but by the 44% mark, if I hadn’t given my word, I probably wouldn’t have finished it.
For what it’s worth, I’d have missed some of the best parts of the book. A lot of the action was there and exciting, although one of the most exciting events happened off the page.

One of the strongest elements was the spiritual content in the book. Ms. Craine really did make most of her spiritual truths beautifully presented and without too much preachiness. And in one section, there was this little gem of a quote.

"Historically, people have lost kingdoms, lost their lives, or found themselves with nothing left when they try to accomplish their life isolated and alone."

Look, I’ve seen reviews for this book. A lot of people really liked it. A few others, like me, were frustrated by it. So, please. Check out the other reviews. I truly hope you enjoy it more than I did.

He sends along his friend Donnie that had accompanied Rayhan's wife, Liz out to Egypt previously,in another book Cairo.
Priscilla and Rayhan had been below when Trey had carried the breastplate up to secure it. Priscilla sent Rayhan up and was finishing packing up tools when she heard a gun shot and ran to the ladder. Stepping off she found Trey dead and the breastplate missing. Three years later she is again called up a ladder to police shutting down the dig and demanding she accompany them to the police station. Instead of being accused of murder, the breastplate has been discovered and the police have sent out word to a deadly smuggler hiding in Siwa that she has the breastplate and is coming to join a dig in Siwa. Thus begins the Christian Romance Adventures of Donnie and Priscilla and what a ride it is.Very intriguing and enjoyable romance in good clear writing.
I enjoy stories that include archaeology and treasures of the past. This suspenseful novel unfolds a compelling story that fits that bill. The setting and characters seem realistic. I think the tale could have been even stronger with more depth to the cast to make the reader truly feel their emotions and danger. As it is, I enjoyed the novel but didn’t sense the deeper connection that helps me feel part of the story. Upon learning that two books came before this one with Agent Donnie Barnes in them and set in similar places, I want to read those too. This one features British Dr. Priscilla Hackling, who works for the Egyptian museum. But her job is far from simple as she faces thefts and death threats along with unwanted romance. Can anyone be trusted? How did the Jewish high priest’s breast plate get hidden in Egypt anyway? All opinions are my own.
Dr. Priscilla Hackling, plans to go on an archeological dig to help find El-Din, the man who stole a valuable breastplate from a previous excavation. El-Din had snatched the artifact from a man as soon as he emerged from the cave with it and killed him. That man was Priscilla’s fiance. Grief stricken, she’s focused intently on the sting operation and is too sad for romance. El-Din’s seen in the area of Siwa and the authorities need to move immediately. Unfortunately, Priscilla doesn’t have time to search for the right person to assist her. She has to settle for Donnie, a man she doesn’t even like very much. Donnie tries to win Priscilla’s trust for her own safety and because he’s attracted to her.
The dig brings mystery and danger as well as the romance Dr. Hackling sought to avoid. The twists and turns kept me flipping pages while the Egyptian setting intrigued me and the ups and downs of the relationship made me wish for a happy ending. I recommend this book for those who enjoy mystery, romance and escaping to foreign places.
