I wanted so much to give this book five stars. It has been a while since I've read a book like this that I couldn't put down. The peril felt real, the cause of the protagonists was relatable. I liked the characters and the light-hearted banter. The characters and conflict were introduced at a pace that made it easy to follow the book and remember the roles each played in the overall plot. I enjoyed it immensely and I wish only two things.1) The author chose to make the evil just a bit too graphic. I did not need the very adult-themed, perverse descriptions of the evil in order for me to be engaged in the story. It was not prevalent or even R-rated, but too disturbing for me.
2) Not quite spoiler, but close: the "hero" was too violent, too vengeful. I know that was part of the journey he was taking, but it was odd for the Maker to endorse such brutality even in the battle against evil. Out and out slaughtering of soldiers only following orders, trapped in their circumstance? Somehow it was just...wrong...inconsistent with the rest of the book. Also I don't enjoy those kinds of graphic, bloody descriptions. Too much for me.
Overall I enjoyed the book, but I am reluctant to read the next one if the dark, graphic descriptions are the same as this book.

The Keeper of Edelyndia The Keeper Chronicles Book 1 edition by Benjamin J Denen Religion Spirituality eBooks Reviews
Not great literature but fairly well written and a good read. Will probably read the Sequill when it is available.
The writing is great; my objection is the level of graphic violence that is repeatedly portrayed. I understand that evil is evil; that evil people do evil things. It is not necessary to graphically describe all the violence in each encounter. Just my opinion.
OK! The seeming hero is a God-sent nearly immortal. There is no savior or Holy Spirit. The religious world is well done. It's fantasy. Let it open your eyes to reality.
I know the other reviews said that the novel was graphic, to me that just fit in very well with the overall theme of the story. We tend to like a "whitewashed" faith version, but war is never clean and painless. Our own martyrs can assess to that! I really enjoyed this novel, and cant wait for another story from Mr Denen.
I borrowed this book after reading Raulin Rise of the Forest King, so I knew I would enjoy it. I'm an avid reader. I've read many good books, and many not-so-good ones, but it's been a long time since I've read one I could not put down. Hey, who needs sleep anyway?
From the very beginning, the characters in this book became friends that I cared about....or enemies that I despised, drawing me into a world in which I wanted to stay. I had to know...Who was Orron? Would he be able to stop the Keepers from taking Ly'ra? Why did Draeden stay with the Keepers? Would it cost him his daughter? I was compelled to keep turning pages.
Finally, I turned the last page, with complete satisfaction and a renewed faith in the Maker's Plan.
As soon as I finished reading, I immediately returned my borrowed ebook and purchased The Keeper of Edelyndia for myself. I will be reading this one again...and again.
Can't wait for the next book. Thank you, Benjamin J. Denen!
This book is well written and edited. Will be glad to read more in this series if they continue to be as good as this one. Good versus evil. There were battle scenes and the writer managed to keep you in suspense. So refreshing to find this book and author. Once I started reading, I just could not stop until I finished it. Yes, I stayed up until morning to finish this book!
Denen's character development was some of the best I've read in a new SciFi/Fantasy series. I can't think of a time while reading this book, that I was bored or wanted to skip a part.
There's some intriguing themes throughout this book, mainly good vs. evil. The violent scenes are there for a reason, not just to throw in little battle scenes to add to the action (although there are a few battles waged, they're not overly gruesome).
Thanks for writing a fine tale!
