Amazing story of this man's life and how he survived the communist regime. It was a captivating book and difficult to put down. I highly recommend it to all readers.
I have read "My Journey to Paradise" several times and find it to be a thoroughly engaging book. Dr. Lim tells a fascinating story of his trials and tribulations to escape Cambodia to reach America. This book would be wonderful required reading material for high school and college political science students so people can see how communist regimes really operate and why people risk their lives to get to America.
Heng Lim's growing up in the midst of famine and unbelievable terror from the Communists who overran Cambodia in the 1970s is a gripping tale of coping and hoping. Throughout those horrible years, when their lives were threatened by force or by hunger, the family consistently carved a next step into their daily routine. In their desparate attempt to stay alive, to find food, to get to freedom, Heng and his mom and brothers walked through mine-laden jungles, slipped past cruel guards who would have shot them on sight and took their lives in jeopardy to save themselves and kin. Heng's prayers may have been to an unknown god or gods in the beginning, but the One True God carried him through that hell and infused him with hope for his future. I am touched by his faith, renewed by his story and heartened by his successes in the land of plenty.
I purchased this book because I heard Dr. Lim speak at our church. I also personally know Dr. Lim as he is my dentist. This book was so interesting I could not put it down.
This is a remarkable story. Somewhat hard to read because it's so sad what this man went through as a boy, but amazing how it has turned out. I can personally say that he is a man of God who lives it every day.
This book is a testament to what the human spirit can endure and still live an inspiring life. Dr. Heng Lim and his family lived through things most of us only heard about in our history lessons. It will bring tears to your eyes and joy to your soul. As Americans we need to appreciate our freedom and the life we are able to live so much more that we ever thought possible. It is just an amazing true story.
